Fresh Scottish King Prawns – FAQs About Delivery, Freshness & Sustainability
What do you feed your prawns on?
Our prawn feed is made for us in Europe, we do not import any feed from outside Europe. We use no chicken farm waste in our feeds- this is illegal in Europe. Our feed contains no antibiotics, or hormones. Much of the protein is from plants, grains and yeast- prawns are omnivores. The fish meat content is derived from trimmings from the seafood industry. We choose not to use South American Soy due to its poor deforestation record. European Soy is more expensive but has far better credentials. There is still some fish oil for fatty acid content, from sustainably sourced local fisheries to ensure the nutritional quality of our prawns on the plate. We are active partners in research to replace all marine sourced ingredients with alternatives derived from insects, invertebrates and microalgae. Although these are not yet licensed for Human food chain use, and are therefore not used in the prawns we sell- yet.
What is the shelf life of your fresh prawns?
Our prawns have a refrigerated shelf life of 5 days due to rapid chilling and strict hygiene standards. For the best eating experience, we recommend consuming them as soon as possible after delivery.
What makes your prawns different from supermarket prawns?
Supermarket “fresh” prawns are almost always defrosted imports that were frozen weeks or months earlier and often treated with sulphites and water-retaining chemicals. Our prawns are Scottish, never frozen, never sulphite treated, and delivered within hours of harvest. They are grown in a clean environment and have never been treated with antibiotics, medications or hormones.
How sustainable are your prawns?
Our prawns are grown in a closed-loop recirculating aquaculture system powered by renewable energy. We do not use antibiotics, we avoid pollution, minimise water use, and do not destroy mangrove forests, unlike many overseas prawn farms.
Can I freeze the prawns at home?
Yes. Because our prawns are delivered fresh and never frozen, you can freeze them at home without losing texture or quality. Freshly frozen at home is better than supermarket prawns that were frozen multiple times and months earlier overseas.
How are the prawns packaged for delivery?
We chill the prawns to just above freezing within seconds of harvest and pack them into insulated boxes with ice packs to maintain the correct temperature throughout delivery. They arrive cold, firm, and at peak quality.
Do your prawns have a smell?
Fresh prawns should smell like the sea, not fishy. Because we harvest and dispatch on the same day, our prawns arrive clean smelling and sweet.
How do you keep the prawns so fresh without chemicals?
We avoid sulphites and bleach dips entirely. Instead, we use hygiene, rapid chilling and a tight cold chain. The prawns go from tank to close to 0 °C within seconds, locking in natural colour and texture.
Are your prawns deveined, peeled or de-headed?
We supply the prawns whole and unpeeled to maximise freshness, texture and culinary usefulness. The heads make a superb stock. To economically peel and process a UK grown prawn we'd need to freeze them, ship them to Morocco for peeling, re-freeze and ship them back again- all to produce an inferior product- no thanks!
Are your prawns safe for people with allergies?
The only allergen present is crustaceans (prawns). We do not add ingredients that contain eggs, gluten, milk, mustard, soya, nuts, or sulphite. Our packing room packs prawns- that's it.
Can I track my order?
Yes. Once your prawns are harvested and dispatched, you will receive tracking details from our delivery partner, including a delivery window and options to manage your delivery.
Can restaurants or retailers buy from you?
Yes. We supply directly to chefs, hospitality, and premium retailers. Please contact us for current availability, sizes and trade pricing. Our cold chain reaches most of the UK.
What species of prawn do you farm?
We farm Litopenaeus vannamei, also known as Pacific white shrimp or king prawns. They are prized for their sweetness, firm texture, and versatility in cooking.
Do your prawns contain any additives or sulphite preservatives?
No. We do not use sulphites, sodium metabisulphite, polyphosphates, glazing, or other nasties. You get 100% prawn-not prawn plus added water or chemicals.
How do I cook your prawns?
Because they are so fresh, our prawns cook very quickly — usually 60 to 90 seconds per side. Overcooking is the main risk. We include simple cooking guidance and share recipe ideas on our website.
