Why Our Prawns Cost More Than Supermarket Prawns

Our prawns are priced differently to supermarket prawns for one simple reason. They are a completely different product.

Most prawns sold in UK supermarkets are imported from outdoor ponds in Asia and South America. They are frozen shortly after harvest, stored in cold chains for up to 2 years, and thawed before sale. This process allows them to be produced cheaply at scale, but it has consequences for flavour, texture, welfare, and transparency.

Our prawns are grown and harvested in the UK in small batches, then delivered directly to customers- fresh never frozen. We grow indoors in a controlled environment which excludes diseases and aprasites- we don't need any antibiotics or medications- our prawns are clean food. We use local labour paid above the living wage and we do not used forced or child labour. That difference drives both quality and cost.

Freshness and freezing

Freezing damages the muscle structure of prawns. Even when done well, it changes texture and water retention, which is why many imported prawns release liquid during cooking and lose firmness.

By contrast, our prawns are delivered fresh. No freezing, no long cold storage, and no thaw cycle. What you are paying for is a unique product at its natural peak.

Scale and production method

Supermarket prawns are produced at vast scale in overseas pond systems. Low labour costs, high volumes, and long supply chains allow prices to be pushed down.

Our prawns are produced at small scale in the UK using closed, land based systems designed to prioritise animal welfare, water quality, and biosecurity. This gives us control, but it costs more to operate.

Welfare, control, and transparency

Many imported prawns are grown in environments where welfare standards, antibiotic use, and environmental controls vary widely.

Our prawns are grown under UK standards, with full control over water quality, health, and husbandry. We can tell you exactly where your prawns came from, which team member grew them, when they were harvested, and how they were handled.

What you are actually paying for

You are not paying for a commodity product. You are paying for freshness, traceability, welfare, and the ability to cook with confidence.

For customers who care about flavour, texture, and provenance, that difference matters. For those simply chasing the lowest price per kilo, supermarket prawns will always be cheaper.

The short version

If you want the cheapest possible prawns, supermarket freezers are the right place to look.

If you want fresh, never frozen king prawns, grown and harvested in the UK and delivered directly to you, our prawns cost more because they are more.
